Synthetic musks — galaxolide and tonalide are the common ones — are added to detergents and softeners precisely because they cling to fibres. Studies have detected them in human tissue and breast milk, and they're under investigation as hormone-active substances.

Optical brighteners and quaternary ammonium compounds ("quats") in conventional softeners add further irritant and environmental concerns. Quats coat fibres to create that artificial softness, which is also why towels washed in conventional softener gradually lose absorbency. Scented candles made from paraffin wax with synthetic fragrance, plug-in diffusers, and spray furniture polishes all contribute to the indoor chemical load. Indoor air in UK homes is routinely more polluted than the air outside, and home-fragrance products are a measurable contributor.   • Trusting the front of the bottle. "Natural", "green" and "eco" are unregulated marketing words. Only the ingredient list tells the truth — read every label, especially the small print on the back.
  • Swapping everything at once. It gets expensive and overwhelming. Replace products as they run out, starting with the highest-exposure items: laundry, washing up liquid, then sprays.
  • Assuming "fragrance-free" means chemical-free. Some fragrance-free products still contain parabens or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Check the full list.
